Christmas 2017 Trip: Jungle View of Maluk

So, after enjoying the coldness of Sembalun, our next stop is Maluk, West Sumbawa. To go there, we have to go to Kayangan Harbor that located in the east of Lombok, then sail to Poto Tano Harbor in Sumbawa Island. We departed at 1 p.m. and it only took an hour from Kayangan Harbor to Poto Tano.

Tips: You can buy snacks and drinks on the ferry from local people before the ship departure. It’s cheap. We suggest not to buy in the ferry’s cafeteria. The price is nonsense.

As soon as arrived in Poto Tano Harbor, be prepared with the amazing of jungle view and limited internet service. Also, because we take a road trip by motorbike, we always refuel the gasoline as soon as we see the seller (known as ‘Pertamini’) of the blue bottle (it contains Pertamax, the main gasoline in Indonesia).

How about food? Don’t ask. As same as Sembalun, there is no fancy restaurant here. One of our hope is only Indomaret/Alfamart (the modern mini-mart in Indonesia). The mini-mart itself could only satisfy us with light snacks, so we were in a hurry to reach Taliwang, the Capital of West Sumbawa. From Poto Tano to Taliwang took 1.5 hours.

Makannya gimana? Nggak usah ditanya. Satu-satunya harapan kami cuma Indomaret/Alfamart. Tapi ya tempatnya kan cuma buat beli jajanan yang ringan-ringan aja. Jadi kami cepat-cepat menuju ke Taliwang, ibu kota Sumbawa Barat. Dari Poto Tano ke Taliwang 1,5 jam.

Road to Taliwang

We reached Taliwang in afternoon around 3 p.m. and out of our expectation, many shops and restaurants closed. The town itself was quite silent. After looking around the city twice, we met this restaurant that visited by only 2 couples of customers, so we decided to have a dine there. Other restaurants were nil of customer btw.

From Taliwang, we continue to ride to Maluk. On the way to Maluk, we’ve seen many beautiful hills and beaches, but we didn’t stop by that time, because we want to catch the sunset at Maluk beach.

We arrived at Maluk around 4:30 p.m. and checked in at Kiwi Hotel. The hotel was… a little bit disappointing for us. There was a bathtub, but it broke. The shower didn’t have a hot water yet it doesn’t sprinkle. The flusher for the toilet didn’t work. And to our amazed, there are 10 electricity plugs but only 3 of them was working. Well, we only need a place to sleep, so we pretended to ignore the details.

We were going to Maluk Beach after checking all the facilities in the room. The location of the beach is near to our hotel. And we didn’t have to wear the helmet.

Maluk Beach

Maluk Beach is a white sand beach with hills on the left and the right side. Local people also like to spend times here, either to play with water, take photos or just take a walk with the pet. No Indonesian people here like to sunbathe. We already have a tan skin. Lol.

Haha…

Oh, don’t forget to order young coconut at the shore. It tastes good.

Oh, jangan lupa pesan kelapa muda di pinggir pantai ya. Enak banget rasanya.

We have chicken satay for our dinner. Unlike Sembalun, nightlife in Maluk is quite ‘alive’ although with limited entertainment. But at least we can see some stores remaining open until 9 p.m.

On the next day, we were planning to see the sunrise, but alas it was raining. We didn’t have breakfast at the hotel, so we checked out at 10 a.m. after the rain stopped and ready to go to Sumbawa Besar.

Keesokan harinya, rencananya kami mau lihat matahari terbit, tapi sayangnya hujan.

We actually want to have breakfast at Benete Harbor (not far from Maluk) but the restaurants were closed. 😦

So we were looking for the food at Taliwang again. On the way from Maluk to Taliwang, we stopped by at Poto Batu Beach. There were no people at the beach but us, and there was no entering ticket fee. Poto Batu Beach is a beach with a big rock in the shore, and it has a hole in it, which when the sun sets, we can capture the sun from that hole. But, yeah, we preferred to have a sunset at Maluk yesterday, so we have no picture of Poto Batu beach.

From Poto Batu beach, we arrived again at Taliwang and decided to have gado-gado as our brunch. The taste of the peanut sauce and the freshness of the vegetables were good.

Next stop: Sumbawa Besar, we are coming!

Perhentian selanjutnya: Sumbawa Besar, kami datang!

Additional Notes

  • Before we had a late lunch, we already purchased snacks at the ferry and from mini-mart.
  • We forgot the name of the restaurant at Taliwang where we had lunch, but we remember it is an ayam taliwang restaurant. Same as at Maluk, we forgot the name of satay restaurant. Also for gado-gado. We are sorry. But, all of that restaurants that we had come have good taste anyway.
  • We made a reservation for the room through Booking.com.
  • Kiwi Hotel is really not our recommendation to stay. We definitely will not come back again.
  • Be prepared for the trip under the blazing sun!

Catatan Tambahan

Happy traveling!
