Christmas 2017 Trip: Chilled at Sembalun Lawang Village

To celebrate our first Christmas together, we decided to have a road trip to several islands near Bali, which we can reach by motorbike. We start the trip on December 22 – 26, 2017.

First stop is Sembalun Lawang, East Lombok. Sembalun Lawang is a small village, at the foot of Mount Rinjani. The village was so small (compare to Mataram), there are many hills around, the strawberry garden is everywhere, and it was quite cold.

We start our trip from Bali at 2 a.m. by ferry on purpose so we can see the sunrise from the sea (but unfortunately it was cloudy). It took approx. 4 hours from Padang Bai Harbor to Lembar Harbor. And the ferry still has to wait about 1 hour before berthing.

We went to Mataram first to have our breakfast at Warung Pecel Ibu Enny (Jl. Pejanggik). For your recommendation, the menus here are so delicious: Nasi pecel, nasi rawon, nasi uduk, and soto. It tastes so Indonesian, with rice of course.

Kami ke Mataram dulu untuk sarapan di Warung Pecel Ibu Enny (Jl. Pejanggik).

After having breakfast, we were heading to Sembalun. It took about 1.5 hours from Mataram. The scenery is full of trees and hills, and it became cold as we enter the Mount Rinjani, National Park. Be careful with the road because it has so many winding and uphill road ahead.

We stayed at Sembalun Kita Cottage, an only 4 rooms cottage that you will love at the first sight. The price is affordable and it worth the facilities. We booked the cottage with mountain view and we never regret it.

Due to a small village, never expect you’ll find any modern shop or restaurant here. We, personally, are not an eat-picker so we enjoy nasi campur (rice with tempe, tahu, and shredded chicken), instant noodle, and pentol (flour meatball) as our lunch and dinner menu.

We start our next day at 5.30 a.m. to catch the sunrise at Bukit Selong (Selong Hill). It was a little bit too late, but whatever, the road is still quiet. We have to pay the entering ticket to Bukit Selong as IDR 5.000/person. The hill is not too high so you don’t have to prepare your physic or what.

Besokannya, kami bangun jam setengah enam pagi untuk lihat matahari terbit di Bukit Selong. Udah agak telat sih, tapi jalannya masih sepi jam segitu.

Up from the hill, you can see rice fields and Mount Rinjani from afar.

One of our curious is a building called Rumah Hobbit, which is very very very different from the movie yet our imagination. Lol.

Haha…

After taking photos, and having nasi goreng as breakfast, we prepared to our next destination.

Additional Note

  • Sembalun village temperature was quite cold as it is located at mountain’s foot. As the one who usually enjoys the sun A LOT, I always wear a thick jacket anytime anywhere when we stayed there.
  • We made a room reservation through Booking.com.
  • Sembalun Kita Cottage is a homely cottage with no luxury equipment except shower and hot water. But compared to the price, it already met our expectation.
  • At Sembalun, local grocery shop still opens until 08:00 P.M.
  • Although Sembalun village is quite far from the main city, the price for food and groceries are still made sense.
  • We went to Sembalun by motorbike, with average speed.

Catatan Tambahan

Happy traveling!
